Armenia faces refugee crisis

The sudden offensive by Azerbaijan forced more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians to flee to neighboring Armenia . The refugees are mainly vulnerable groups such as older people, women and children, pregnant women and newborns, people living with disabilities, and people with chronic health conditions. 

Armenian government has launched support programs for the refugees, but it will take some time to deal with the humanitarian needs of these people. Recognizing that there will be no immediate solution to the refugee crisis, the Armenian government has 

Armenia is currently facing a humanitarian crisis as more than 100,000 refugees have fled  the Nagorno-Karabakh region. The crisis is the consequence of a Azerbaijian’s military operation to retake control of the region, which was part of the Soviet Union. 

Though recognised as part of Azerbaijan, the populace comprises most only  Armenian Christians who set up the self-styled Republic of Artsakh. It has seen decades of conflict, with many ethnic Armenian refugees fearing  persecution and ethnic cleansing . The sudden influx has created a strain in Government capabilities to cope with those in need. 

 The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has reported that many of the refugees are hungry, exhausted, and in need of immediate assistance . Presently, the Armenian Government has pledged to give each refugee a one-off financial assistance of 100,000 AMD ($250).

Meanwhile state agencies and non-governmental organizations have provided assistance to refugees in regard to accommodation, financial assistance, education, social and psychological assistance, and employment. 

Acknowledging the unchanging situation, the Armenian government has launched further programs to support  refugees, though many believe progress will be slow given the magnitude of numbers.
