Tesla has abandoned its ambitious plans to expand its gigacasting technology, which is another sign of cost-cutting amid falling sales and growing competition

"Tesla is a leader in gigacasting, an advanced technology that uses huge presses with a capacity of thousands of tons of pressure to cast large sections of the car bottom. In a typical car, the underbody can consist of hundreds of individual parts", the publication explains.

So, last year, the company was developing a new platform for making the underbody of small cars from a single molded part to radically simplify production and reduce costs. But now Tesla has stopped this program, deciding to focus on the proven method of casting the bottom in three parts.

"The decision to postpone a potential breakthrough in production is another example of Tesla cutting short-term costs to adjust to falling sales and profitability, declining demand for electric vehicles globally, and increased competition from other electric vehicle manufacturers such as China's BYD", the report said.

In this regard, it is also indicated that last month Tesla laid off more than 10% of its employees worldwide. Several senior executives also resigned.

Such steps, Reuters summarizes, reflect a fundamental change in strategy – Tesla prefers to focus on the development of self-driving cars rather than the rapid increase in electric vehicle sales, which many investors were counting on.

  • In mid-April, Tesla recalled more than 3.8 thousand Cybertruck electric pickups in the United States due to a faulty accelerator pedal.
  • Tesla is reducing car prices in several countries due to falling sales.
