Disney Studios showed a new trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King. The trailer for the film, which is a prequel to the original The Lion King, is not yet available for public viewing. However, some details about the film have become known.
The plot of Mufasa: The Lion King will focus on the early years of the future animal ruler, as well as his formidable younger brother Scar. The short but majestic footage, which is not yet available to the public, shows the same stunningly realistic African savannah as the previous movie and begins with the iconic "Lion King" overture. A young Mufasa leaps over rhinos and various jungle animals, and the voice of the traveling Rafiki prepares the viewer for the story of "a lion born without a drop of nobility in his blood, a lion that would change our lives forever, a lion that would shape our destiny".
The movie is set before the events of Disney's 2019 remake, not the events of the 1994 animated film. According to official information, "Mufasa" returns to the African savannah when Rafiki tells Kiara, Simba and Nala's daughter, the story of her grandfather. Timon and Pumbaa help tell the prequel story, although they were not shown in the trailer.
Mufasa is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 20 and could be a major winter holiday event. However, Disney's recent box office results suggest that familiarity with the brand is not enough to keep families coming to theaters.
Director Barry Jenkins has revealed that there will be new music in "Mufasa." However, he did not reveal any details about what exactly it will sound like.
"They restrained me", Jenkins joked, "I can't tell you who created these new songs, but they are absolutely incredible".
The 2019 remake, directed by Jon Favreau, grossed $1.66 billion worldwide despite mixed reviews. The Lion King was one of seven Disney films to cross the billion-dollar mark that year. However, since the pandemic, only six films have reached this coveted level.
