"First of all, no politician will tell us what to do, and we will not listen to any politician. I'm against boycotts, I don't like boycotts or bans. But in the case of russia, there was simply no other way out, and we all have to try to help stop this war, it's crazy," the UEFA president said.
Alexander Čeferin, in particular, reacted to the statement of German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who had previously demanded that russia and Belarus be excluded from Euro 2024 qualification.
"But with regard to Belarus, several politicians have written to us to exclude anyone who has helped russia. Now I ask: are those who buy gas helping russia? Should we exclude all European countries, even the most vocal ones, who continue to buy gas? Geostrategic problems should be solved by politicians. Demanding that sports organizations do the job instead of them is populism and nothing more", Čeferin said.
All russian clubs and national teams have been suspended from international tournaments because of russia's war against Ukraine.
