The officer who gave grenades to Zaluzhnyi's deceased assistant will be tried under four articles

On April 1, prosecutors sent to court an indictment against the officer who gave grenades to the deceased assistant to the former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi. The officer will be tried under four articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine

"The Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Central Region has sent an indictment to the court over the death of an assistant to the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The serviceman is finally charged with misappropriation and sale of ammunition, negligent homicide, causing grievous bodily harm by negligence and illegal handling of weapons (Art. 4 of Art. 410, Part 1 of Art. 119, Art. 128, Part 1 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)," the statement said.

The investigation found that on November 6, 2023, the deceased celebrated his birthday. One of the gifts was a box. It contained, among other things, 6 combat grenades donated by a colleague, which the latter received in a military unit while performing military service. While taking the ammunition away from the child, the officer pulled the ring, which provoked the explosion. His 13-year-old son was hospitalized with serious injuries, and his 11-year-old daughter sustained minor injuries.

Law enforcement officers seized 5 more similar grenades at the scene.

Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict.

What is known about the death of Zaluzhnyi's aide Hennadii Chastiakov

On November 6, 2023, at 17:15, in the village of Chaiky, Kyiv region, Hennadii Chastiakov, an aide to the then Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi, died from a grenade explosion. Chastiakov's 13-year-old son was seriously wounded and hospitalized.

Zaluzhnyi spoke about the tragedy.

"Unspeakable pain and a heavy loss for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and for me personally. Today, under tragic circumstances, my assistant and close friend, Major Hennadii Chastiakov, died in his family circle on his birthday. An unknown explosive device detonated in one of his gifts. Hennadii left behind a wife and four children. My deepest condolences to the family," he wrote in his telegram channel.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that the death of Hennadii Chastiakov, assistant to the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, was caused by the explosion of a grenade that was presented to him for his birthday.

On November 7, 2023, the investigation of the incident was entrusted to the State Bureau of Investigation, and later they named the main version of the death of Zaluzhnyi's assistant.

On March 29, the State Bureau of Investigation completed a pre-trial investigation into the officer who gave grenades to the deceased assistant of Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, Hennadii Chastiakov.
