He emphasized that today's decision is a key step forward on the country's path to the EU.

"Now we need to continue the hard work to ensure that Bosnia and Herzegovina moves steadily forward as your people wish," Michel said.

• Bosnia and Herzegovina applied for EU membership in February 2016.
• On October 12, 2022, the European Commission recommended granting Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status to the European Union.
• On December 15, 2022, the leaders of the EU member states agreed to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina the status of a candidate country for accession to the Union.
• On March 12, 2024, the European Commission recommended starting accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
