Hungary Demands Ukraine Restore Language Rights for Hungarian Minority
Peter Szijjártó said that Hungarians in Ukraine should live with the rights they had before 2015
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has appealed to the Ukrainian authorities to return the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine that it had before 2015.
About this stated at a joint press briefing with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak.
"We have a request - maybe it's too much, and you will think that I am not polite - but we ask to return to the Hungarian minority all the rights that it had before 2015. We are not asking for anything else", - Szijjártó said.
He clarified that since 2017, Ukraine has been adopting laws that reduced the rights of the Hungarian minority. However, in December 2023, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law that stopped this.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister formulated a request in 11 points, including: restoring the status of the national school, the opportunity to take matriculation exams in Hungarian and use Hungarian in public life.
As a reminder, back in December 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy demanded that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban explain why his government was preventing Ukraine from starting negotiations on Ukraine's accession to NATO.
