Tourism in Greece: A key driver of the economy with substantial contributions to GDP in 2022

Tourism made a significant contribution to Greece's Gross Domestic Product in 2022, estimated at nearly €24 billion, which represents 11.5% of total GDP. Five regions in the country generated almost 90% of tourism revenue, with three of them dedicated exclusively to tourism.
The figures reflect resilience and increasing dynamism in the tourism sector, with 2022 marking the end of the pandemic period, according to annual research by the Hellenic Tourism Confederation (INSETE), according to Agerpres.
The main regions contributing to tourism revenues are:
South Aegean: 27%
Crete: 21%
Attica: 17%
Ionian Islands: 15%
Central Macedonia: 9%
INSETE stresses the importance of an integrated strategy, focusing on five key pillars, including infrastructure, investment and competitiveness, efficient management of tourist destinations, labor market and sustainability.
The Central Bank of Greece forecasts tourism revenues of €21 billion this year, an increase of 15.6% compared to 2019 (when revenues of €18.17 billion were recorded) and an increase of 19.1% compared to 2022 (when revenues of €17.63 billion were recorded).
