Head coach of the Ukraine national team Serhiy Rebrov called the main reason for the team's departure from Euro 2024 the defeat in the opening match against Romania
Rebrov wrote about it on Instagram.
"As a team, we set goals for ourselves and believed that we are able to at least get out of the group in the playoff rounds and fight for the furthest possible passage at this Euro. I know that this is what the whole country expected from us. I am very sorry that we could not achieve this and give you more positive emotions, despite your support and faith in us", Rebrov wrote.
According to him, the main reason for the elimination of Ukraine from the European Championship after the group round was the defeat in the opening game against Romania.
"Although we played two quality matches, where the guys showed their best sides and got 4 points, it was due to the first, extremely bad game that we are forced to prematurely end our performance at the Euro. It is a shame to leave the tournament at this stage, knowing that we were capable of more. We can only wait and prepare for the fall League of Nations and the upcoming qualification for the World Cup", Rebrov concluded.
How Ukraine performed at Euro 2024
The Ukraine national team got off to a poor start at the World Cup and on June 17 in Munich failed to play against Romania and lost the match 0-3. On June 21, in the 2nd round of Euro 2024, Ukrainian players won a willful victory over Slovakia — 2:1. On June 26, Ukraine played to a nil-nil draw with Belgium in Round 3.
In the final Group E standings, all teams have four points each. However, due to the worst goal difference, Ukraine finished last and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
