Ukrainian refugees in Estonia will be deprived of the right to free travel in county transport: the reason
Estonia's Minister of Regional Affairs Piret Hartman has ruled that Ukrainian refugees will lose their right to free travel on county line buses, as they no longer need the benefits to adapt to their new environment
According to the decree, the maximum price of a single ticket on county bus lines will be 10 euros, and the maximum price of a 30-day pass will be 150 euros.
"Ukrainian war refugees are excluded from the list of persons entitled to free travel on county bus lines", reads the explanatory note to the bill.
According to Hartman, refugees should be treated in the same way as Estonian citizens with regard to public transportation, as Ukrainians have the same rights to social guarantees and various subsidies.
She noted that for a certain period of time, transportation benefits for Ukrainians were justified so that people who left their homes because of the war would receive maximum assistance to quickly adapt to the new environment.
Now, however, as Hartman noted, this period has lasted for several years, and society has done everything to ensure that Ukrainians who have come to Estonia are able to find employment, housing and master the Estonian language.
"Today's agreement is that the same rules apply to Ukrainians as to Estonian citizens", the minister emphasized.
- On May 30, it was reported that the Commission on Migration of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe called on European countries to extend temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees or create new conditions for Ukrainians to stay legally on their territories.
