"It was a conscious and calculated crime": Zelenskyy on the anniversary of the Kakhovka HPP bombing
On the first anniversary of the Russian bombing of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was a conscious and calculated Russian crime
"A year ago, Russian occupiers blew up the dam and buildings of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. It was a conscious and calculated crime - one of their biggest crimes against nature and people of our entire region. Even the exact number of deaths is impossible to find out now, because the occupied part of Kherson region received the most massive blow", he said.
Zelenskyy noted that the tragedy affected at least tens of thousands of people, hundreds of thousands were left without drinking water. Also, significant areas of Ukraine were flooded and the Kakhovka reservoir was destroyed.
"Which provided, in particular, the stability of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — the largest in Europe. The immediate consequences of this crime were felt even in the neighboring countries of our Black Sea region", the president added.
He noted that Ukraine managed to partially eliminate the consequences of the Russian strike within a year.
"I am grateful to everyone who rescued people, helped to provide housing, restored the supply of drinking water. This is significant work. And no less significant work will be holding Russia fairly accountable for this and other crimes of war — Russia's deliberate strikes against people and humanity, against all living things. All those who work for justice for Ukraine and for the restoration of our country are defenders of life", Zelenskyy emphasized.
- On June 6, Ukrhydroenergo CEO Ihor Sirota said that it would be possible to rebuild the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant destroyed by the Russians in 6–7 years after de-occupation.
