Sweden leads the EU in renewable energy consumption with 66% in 2022
The EU aims to consume 42.5% renewable energy by 2030
A report published by Eurostat on renewable energy consumption in the European Union reveals that in 2022, 23.0% of final gross energy consumption will come from renewable sources. After the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive, the EU target for 2030 has been increased from 32% to 42.5%. However, 17 of the 27 Member States reported shares below the EU average. Sweden leads the way, achieving 66.0% of final consumption from renewable sources, outperforming countries such as Finland, Latvia and Denmark. By contrast, Ireland, Malta, Belgium and Luxembourg have the lowest shares of renewable energy. More collective efforts are needed for the EU to reach the new target of 42.5% by 2030.
