Russia and Sudan may sign arms exchange agreement — ISW
Russia may sign an agreement with Sudan's armed forces to exchange weapons for the Russian logistics hub at Port Sudan on the Red Sea
It recalled that Yasser Al-Atta, the assistant commander-in-chief of the Air Force, said on May 25 that a delegation of military officers would soon travel to Russia to conclude an agreement to exchange "vital arms and ammunition" for a Russian logistics center in Port Sudan.
Al-Atta described the planned Russian center as "not exactly a military base".
Russia also claimed that Sudan's military was able to retake several Khartoum neighborhoods thanks to Iranian drone deliveries.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and special presidential representative for Africa and the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov met with AF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and several other Sudanese officials during a two-day visit to Sudan on April 28 and 29.
ISW has previously assessed that Russia might change sides in Sudan's civil war to support Sudan's armed forces and establish its naval base in the Red Sea.
Analysts believe Russian support for the Sudanese military would greatly benefit Iran because it would bring Russian and Iranian policy and strategy in the region closer together.
- It was recently reported that a Sudanese military delegation would visit Russia within weeks to negotiate the provision of Russian arms in exchange for Moscow's permission to establish a naval base on the Red Sea coast.
