Romania prepares to become a regional leader in bitumen production: Seven private investors compete for state-of-the-art terminal at Port of Constanta
The Ministry of Energy supports the diversification of Oil Terminal SA's activities, aiming to create a strategic bitumen terminal to ensure energy security and strengthen the country's position on the regional market
Romania is committed to becoming a regional leader in bitumen production, and the Energy Ministry has launched a key initiative to create a state-of-the-art bitumen terminal at the Port of Constanta. With only 20% of its bitumen needs covered by domestic production, the country is seeking private partnerships to support the diversification of Oil Terminal SA's activities.
Seven private investors submitted bids in the public procedure initiated by Oil Terminal, including Socar Petroleum SA, Takida Terminal SRL, Frial SA, OMV Petrom SA, Vitaro Energy SRL, Trafigura Pte Ltd and Euronova Energies SA, reports Agerpres. This fierce competition indicates the interest and importance that the private sector attaches to this ambitious project.
Energy Minister Sebastian Ioan Burduja underlined the importance of the project for redefining Romania's energy landscape. "With this ambitious project, we are not only strengthening a strategic company such as OIL Terminal, but we are also consolidating an entire construction materials and transport industry in Romania. Our move is a central pillar in ensuring a sustainable economy and robust energy and economic security, especially in the context of current geopolitical tensions"said Burduja.
The upcoming selection procedure will be a crucial step in the implementation of Oil Terminal SA's development strategy and management plan for the period 2023-2027. The final decision on the selection of the partner will be taken after a careful, transparent and fair evaluation, with the aim of boosting the national economy and industry, as well as ensuring Romania's strong position in the regional bitumen market.
The bitumen terminal will be located in the Port of Constanta, on the platform of the Port Platform Section, with access to all transport routes (sea, rail and road). Oil Terminal SA, a public company listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange since 1998, with over 125 years of experience, already plays a significant role in the handling and storage of crude oil and petroleum products, being strategically located at the intersection of transport corridors.
