ISW: russian drones conduct reconnaissance in the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces due to lack of air defense
Ukraine needs Western interceptor missiles to fight drones
The Institute for the Study of War reports that russian troops are using drones for reconnaissance in Ukraine's deep rear due to a lack of air defense. According to the Royal United Services Institute, Ukraine has had to reduce its stockpile of anti-aircraft missile systems, allowing russian drones to fly freely over its rear areas, including Kharkiv. This has forced Ukraine to make difficult decisions between deploying air defense to protect critical infrastructure in the rear or on the front lines.
russian forces have been conducting a large-scale air campaign against Kharkiv, using planning bombs to support ground operations in the north of the city. ISW analysts believe that Ukrainian forces need Western interceptor missiles to destroy russian drones, both in the rear and on the front lines.
On May 17, 114 combat engagements took place on the frontline. The situation is under control in Vovchansk, Kharkiv region.
