Director George Miller wanted to apply anti-aging technology to Charlize Theron, one of the main characters in the movie Mad Max, but chose Anya Taylor-Joy

Furious Max director George Miller considered using Charlize Theron's rejuvenation technology in his new film Furiosa: Mad Max Saga. The 48-year-old American actress played Empress Furiosa in the 2015 film.

But Miller admitted that it would be difficult to realize, so he decided to involve someone younger — 28-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy in this role. The director noted that he had watched leading actors age in films such as Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Ang Lee's The Double.

"Both of them were skillful directors, but it was never convincing", Miller said, commenting on the rejuvenation technology.

He said he was thinking about people watching a movie and knowing it was a special effect.

The 79-year-old director added that one of the things that interests him most about filmmaking today is all the new effects tools. However, he believes that these tools alone are not enough.

"I mean, we're basically following someone between the ages of 10 and 26-28, something like that", Miller continued.

Taylor-Joy — who rose to fame as the lead in the Netflix series Queen's Gambit — was ready to take on the role of a character already made popular by Theron. Miller first saw her abilities when director Edgar Wright took him to a screening of his film Last Night in Soho, in which Taylor-Joy played the lead role.

"In that physical sense, she had all the makings of that character — someone who has a lot of natural skills and abilities, and someone who could survive in the wilderness, which is a pretty uncompromising world. She embodied all of that", Miller added.
