Budanov says he expects a new Russian offensive in Sumy region

On Monday, May 13, the head of Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov, said he expects a new Russian offensive in Sumy region

This was reported by espreso.tv

"The situation is on the brink, Budanov said in a video message from a bunker in Kharkiv. Every 3 hours, the situation approaches critical".

He said the reason for this is a critical shortage of weapons, especially artillery ammunition, and $60.8 billion worth of weapons from the United States have barely begun to arrive in Ukraine.

Budanov believes that Russian attacks in the northeast are intended to deplete the reserves of Ukrainian soldiers and distract them from fighting in other regions.

He added that the Ukrainian army is currently trying to redeploy troops from other parts of the front to strengthen its defense in the northeast.

"All our forces are either here or in Chasiv Yar, the GUR chief said, referring to a Ukrainian stronghold about 190 km to the south. Unfortunately, we don't have anyone else in reserve".

Based on the overall situation at the front, Budanov concluded that Ukrainian troops will be able to strengthen their positions and stabilize the front over the next few days. However, he expects Russia to launch a new offensive further north of Kharkiv, in Sumy region.

  • On May 14, Defense Express analyst Serhiy Zgurets said he believes that the occupiers' offensive in Kharkiv region is aimed not only at stretching the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but also at creating conditions for offensive actions in the Kupiansk direction.
