The CEO of The Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel Entertainment, Bob Iger, said that the company plans to release fewer superhero films in the future. According to Iger, Disney intends to focus on quality rather than quantity.
In a conversation with Wall Street analysts, the CEO confirmed that he plans to release no more than three new Marvel films a year, as well as only two TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The studio head explained that this plan is part of Disney's overall strategy — they will focus on quality over quantity, and this applies in particular to their Marvel resources.
"We're going to slowly scale back and probably go to two series a year instead of four, and reduce the release of movies from maybe four a year to two or three at most. We're working hard on what that path will be", Iger said.
He continued that the MCU will have "a few good movies in 2025" and then they will focus on the new Avengers. Iger added that he trusts the team and is excited about the results.
There are currently four Marvel movies scheduled for release in 2025: Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and Blade: The Vampire Slayer, with four more planned for 2026, including the fifth Avengers movie.
The decision to reduce the number of films came after a series of high-profile box office disappointments for the studio. The only new movie in the MCU in 2024 will be Deadpool and Wolverine, which will be released on July 26.
A new trailer for the fantasy action movie Deadpool and Wolverine has recently been released, breaking the record for the most swear words among all Marvel movie trailers.
