Italy's fourth largest city is tightening its rules for smokers: now you can't light a cigarette even in the open air if there are other people within five meters of you

This was reported by espreso.tv

The fight against smoking in public places began in Italy more than 20 years ago: since then, the authorities have banned smoking in public buildings, offices, restaurants, bars, and hotels.

The new law stipulates that in Turin, a person can ask permission from people nearby to smoke a cigarette. If they agree, then the police will not have the authority to fine the smoker (the fine is 100 euros). At the same time, smoking is strictly prohibited in the presence of pregnant women and children.

"It's about respecting those who don't smoke and, in a sense, promoting a culture of respect", said Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo.

The Italian government has long been considering a nationwide ban on outdoor smoking.

  • In France, a National Smoking Control Program will be launched in early 2024, aiming to create a tobacco-free generation by 2032.
