According to law enforcement officials, the man, a Tajik in his 30s, is currently in custody to prevent possible danger, and the police are still checking information about him.
The head of the Cologne criminal police, Michael Esser, emphasized the use of all legal means to protect people, the cathedral and the New Year's holidays.
The court in Oberhausen granted the police request to keep him in custody until January 7. Law enforcement officials did not disclose the specific nature of the threat, but noted that they were responding to possible signals from Islamic extremists.
