Turkish parliament is unlikely to finalize Sweden's accession to NATO by mid-January
Erdogan could potentially convene an extraordinary meeting to ratify the protocol, but it is most likely that the vote will take place after MPs return from the New Year's break on January 15
Sweden is unlikely to receive final approval for NATO membership in the Turkish parliament until mid-January.
This was reported by AFP, citing its own sources in the Turkish parliament.
It is known that on Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament approved a protocol on the ratification of Sweden's accession, which expresses hope for a quick completion of the process through a vote in the hall and the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
There is a possibility that Erdogan will call an extraordinary meeting to ratify the protocol, but it is more likely that the vote will take place after the New Year's break, when MPs return on January 15. However, according to reports, the vote also depends on negotiations with the United States on the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey. Ankara has openly stated that the final decision on Sweden's accession will depend on the decision of the US Congress on the fighter jets.
