Court orders suspension of Albania's ratification of migration pact with Italy
The Albanian parliament was due to ratify the pact on Thursday, but has been forced to suspend it after the constitutional court agreed to review its constitutionality following a request filed by 30 opposition MPs last week

State Supreme Court in Albania has issued a ruling calling into question the ratification of the migration pact between Albania and Italy. In a statement, the Constitutional Court said that the court agreed to consider the opposition's request to review the constitutionality of the agreement, which is important for the Albanian parliament.

This was reported by AP.

The agreement, which Italy and Albania reached last month, provided for the construction of reception centers for migrants crossing by sea in Albania. These centers were intended to receive migrants trying to land on the shore and aim to reduce the number of migrants trying to enter Italy. The scheduled ratification of the agreement by the Albanian parliament on December 14 is now in doubt, as the Constitutional Court has agreed to review its constitutionality at the request of 30 opposition MPs.

The opposition MPs expressed their dissatisfaction with what they believe were procedural mistakes made during the agreement's conclusion, as well as the fact that they were not taken into account during the negotiations. They specifically criticized Prime Minister Edi Rama for not consulting with the opposition before concluding such an important agreement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The Constitutional Court has scheduled a hearing on this issue for January 18, which automatically suspends the ratification procedure in parliament. This decision casts doubt on the agreement's validity and sets the stage for further debate.
