The European Union is imposing on Romania an ambitious plan to modernize its railway infrastructure.

According to EU Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean, our country must ensure that trains run at a speed of 160 km/h by 2030, in line with pan-European obligations, reports Agerpres

The plan is part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which sets precise standards for road and rail infrastructure in all EU member states. Vălean stressed the importance of implementing these standards, including innovation through the introduction of intelligent transport systems.

"The core network must be completed by 2030, and there are funding opportunities for projects in this respect," said the European Commissioner. EU funds worth around €12 billion are available for co-financing infrastructure projects in Romania, covering various absorption deadlines until 2027.

The secondary or extended network must be completed by 2040 and the extended network, covering the rest of the infrastructure, by 2050. These projects offer clear opportunities for development and modernization, with common and clearly defined governance.

The European Commission stresses that these measures will contribute to making rail transport more efficient and competitive, with significant economic and environmental benefits. The implementation of these standards within the set timeframe will be crucial to align with European guidelines and strengthen Romania's transport system.
