In a surprise announcement, the 100% Romanian airline DAN-AIR has decided temporarily to suspend flight operations from Ghimbav International Airport in Brașov. The main reason is the airport authorities' decision to postpone the extension of operating hours from 12 to 16 hours until January 2024.

Problems reported by DAN-AIR include restricted hours, lack of essential facilities for winter operations and lack of facilities for airlines. These challenges led to the decision to temporarily move flights to Bacău International Airport, reports revistabiz.ro

DAN-AIR was the first airline to start scheduled flights from Ghimbav Airport in June 2023, helping to leverage the €120 million investment of public funds. However, the problems encountered led to significant losses for the company.

In an attempt to overcome the obstacles, DAN-AIR proposed solutions, including moving the virtual control tower or contracting information service providers. However, the authorities did not respond effectively, and the reduced schedule and lack of certification for low visibility operations further complicated the situation.

The departure of DAN-AIR leaves Brașov Airport with only one airline, and passengers who bought tickets for the suspended flights will benefit from free transfers on the Brașov-Bacău route and return.

From 13 November, flights will operate from Brașov Airport as originally scheduled, with take-off and landing from Bacău. From 11 December, operations will be completely moved to Bacău Airport, and the new timetable and destinations will be communicated later.

DAN-AIR's decision underlines the challenges faced by the aviation industry in Romania and the need for quick and efficient solutions to ensure the optimal functioning of airports and to support the development of the aviation infrastructure in the country.
