Romania's net coal production in the first nine months of this year was over 1.918 million tons of oil equivalent, down 16% (minus 366,700 toe) compared to the same period in 2022.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows, according to Profit, show that during the same period, Romania imported 166,700 toe of net coal, 51% less than imports in the same period last year (minus 173,500 toe).

According to the National Commission for Strategy and Forecasting (CNSP), Romania's coal production is expected to decrease by 12.5% this year to 2.705 million toe, while imports will decrease by 40.3% to 210,000 toe.

The forecast for the period up to 2026 indicates a further decrease in coal production and imports, in the context of the commissioning of other energy production capacities. Thus, in 2024, production is expected to fall by 6.7% to 2.525 million toe and imports by the same rate to 195,000 toe. The forecast shows an 8.6% reduction in 2025 (to 2.31 million toe of production and 185,000 toe of imports) and a 10.2% decrease in 2026 (to 2.075 million toe of production and 180,000 toe of imports).
