Why are more women solo travelling?
Solo travel has become an increasingly popular choice for women around the world, and the reasons behind this trend are multifaceted and compelling. The decision to embark on solo journeys represents a significant shift in travel patterns and reflects the evolving aspirations and priorities of women in the modern era.
“I’ve never been more confident that when I’m travelling - it comes with being by yourself, and having to sort everything out by yourself.” For Solo travellers like Eloise Delt, travelling solo is an opportunity to grow in independence and confidence. Navigating unfamiliar destinations, making decisions, and overcoming challenges while travelling alone can serve as an empowering experience while fostering a sense of self-reliance and resilience.
Solo female travel defies traditional gender norms and challenges societal expectations. It’s a viewpoint shared by Eleanor Baumber. “My relatives are still amazed that I solo travel - I think because they’ve grown up in a time when there was a very clear path for women, and it didn’t include solo travel or pursuing a career.”The autonomy that comes with solo travelling is one that is not confined to stereotypes or cultural limitations. Venturing to countries on their own terms, with their own schedules, and prioritising their own interests are examples of women redefining the narrative around travel and gender roles.
The pandemic saw an upsurge in those reporting to have mental health difficulties. Consequently, prioritising mental health and self-care has also seen a similar influx. Solo travel provides women with both. “I started to think about how I wanted to spend my time,” said Marina Boteni. If it [solo travelling] goes against the norm, then I don’t care. If I’m happy and not hurting anyone then that’s all that matters.”
It offers a break from caregiving roles and societal pressures, enabling women to focus on their personal needs, desires, and aspirations.
The surge in solo female travel reflects a profound shift in societal attitudes and women's aspirations, highlighting the desire for empowerment, self-discovery, and independence. As women continue to embrace the transformative potential of solo travel, this trend is poised to redefine the landscape of travel and inspire a new generation of adventurous and empowered female explorers.
