Georgia one step closer to EU membership

Georgia EU application

Georgia has received positive news regarding its application to join the European Union . On November 8, the European Union recommended that Georgia should officially be named as a candidate to join, on the condition that certain issues are addressed. Namely, these are in reference to problems surrounding corruption as well as election deficiencies.

In December, a decision will be finalised following discussions with other EU member states. It is a long, arduous application but Tbilisi remains hopeful and, presently, exultant at their success thus far.

With over 80% of the Georgian public supporting the nation’s entry into the EU, it has been given priority on Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili’s agenda. To demonstrate its willingness to adhere to EU protocol, Georgia has begun the implementation of its Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with the EU, as well as the Commission’s 12 priorities.

The membership application is one that is supported by many EU states , arguing that the risk of Georgia becoming a geopolitical no man’s land could be manipulated by the Kremlin, leading to pro-Russian narratives and further destabilization attempts.

Georgia still has a way to go before being granted membership, and the pressing need to address democratic backsliding. If dealt with efficiently and effectively, the people of Georgia will have further cause to celebrate.
