Nepalese Relief efforts under pressure following earthquake
Nepal was hit by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake on Friday, November 3, 2023, which killed 157 people and injured dozens more .
The earthquake flattened villages in Nepal's northwest mountains, leaving thousands homeless and causing widespread damage to structures. The government of Nepal has been working to provide aid to those affected by the earthquake, with a focus on supplying food and setting up temporary shelters .
The United Nations, donors, international NGOs, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have also mobilized resources to provide aid to affected communities.
Aid efforts have been hampered by the fact that many of the affected villages can only be reached by foot, as roads have been blocked by landslides6 . However, aid has begun to trickle in, with villagers salvaging what is left of their belongings .
The U.S. Pacific Command has named the U.S. military earthquake relief efforts in Nepal "Operation Sahayogi Haat," meaning "Helping Hand" in Nepali.
Natural disasters like the Nepal earthquake affect millions of people around the world each year, and preparedness and response to such disasters will be a central topic at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul in May 2024. Despite the challenges, aid efforts continue to provide critical life-saving aid to those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
