Military mobilisation in Ukraine in 2023: age, rights, and service duration
Due to the prolonged full-scale war in Ukraine, a general mobilisation was announced in 2023. Men aged 18 to 60 are subject to military conscription, but not all of them are called to the front lines. According to the law , the conscription age for men is set at 25 for those without prior military experience. Men aged 18 to 24 are not conscripted if they haven't participated in military actions before, but they have the option to serve under a contract.
As for the age exempt from mobilisation in Ukraine, "Fakty" reported with reference to lawyer Rostislav Kravets. He emphasises that in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, even men over the age of 60 can serve, specifically: the senior officer corps can serve until the age of 65 (voluntarily). For those who have previous military service and a military specialty, different age limits for service are established depending on the rank:
Enlisted personnel, junior and senior non-commissioned officers (contract) – up to 45 years.
Senior non-commissioned officers and senior enlisted personnel (contract) – up to 50 years.
Senior non-commissioned officers and senior enlisted personnel (contract) – up to 55 years.
Junior officer corps – up to 45 years.
Senior officer corps – up to 60 years.
It's important to note that conscription for men under the age of 25 without combat experience is considered illegal and can be challenged in court. Furthermore, receiving a summons in the street does not automatically mean mobilisation to the front lines; it is used to update the database of draftees.
