Significant increase in 2024

France, Spain and the Netherlands will strengthen their voice and influence in the European Union with the European Parliament's decision to increase the number of seats for Romanian MEPs. For the 2024-2029 term, these countries will have two more seats per country.

How to calculate the number of seats per country:

The process of determining the number of MEPs for each country in the European Union reflects the fundamental principle of 'degressive proportionality', according to the European Parliament.

Under EU law, the total number of seats in the European Parliament is limited to 750, including the President. The allocation of seats to each country is decided before every European election session, taking into account the size of the population of that country.

The principle of 'degressive proportionality' ensures that although smaller countries have a smaller number of MEPs, they represent a larger proportion of the country's population, thus maintaining a balance between proportional representation and avoiding over-representation.

Each country is guaranteed a minimum of six seats and capped at a maximum of 96 seats, ensuring minimum representation while preventing any single country from becoming overly dominant.
