Romanian Defense Council approves transfer of Patriot SAMs to Ukraine
Romania will transfer the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. A corresponding decision was made today, 20 June, at a meeting of the country's Defence Council
"Given the significant deterioration of the security situation in Ukraine as a result of Russia's continuous and massive attacks on civilians and infrastructure, especially energy, and the regional implications of this situation, including for Romania's security, in close coordination with Alliance members, the Council members decided to transfer the Patriot system to Ukraine", the report said.
It is noted that this transfer is subject to Romania continuing negotiations with Alliance members in order to obtain a similar or equivalent system to ensure the protection of national airspace, modernization of the Romanian army and interoperability with the NATO system.
"Romania's position is and will be unequivocal in its multidimensional support for Ukraine, together with the international community, in its legitimate right to self-defense in the face of illegal and unprovoked Russian aggression", the statement added.
