Germany needs an additional 75,000 military personnel to fulfill NATO's defense plans

The publication says the NATO summit in Vilnius in 2023 agreed on new defense plans, on which calculations of specific requirements for alliance nations are based.

The German Defense Ministry now estimates that the Bundeswehr's manpower requirements are greater than last year.

The piece said NATO's demand for "additional troops of corps and divisions as well as brigades, in particular support forces", according to the German armed forces report, is an additional need for 75,000 troops.

At the same time, another report from the German defense ministry notes: the NATO plans would require an increase in personnel from the previous 203,000 to "more than 272,000 troops".

  • On June 6, it was reported that the German government had updated a Cold War-era "framework directive on total defense" because of predictions of a likely Russian attack on NATO countries. Such a plan defines security measures in the event of aggression.
