Flights to Soar High: Record Number of Passengers on Romanian Airports in 2023
Recovery and expansion:17% growth from 2022, exceeding pre-pandemic levels
Romania's airports recorded an impressive number of almost 25 million passengers in 2023, marking a significant increase of 17% over the previous year, shows data from the Romanian Airports Association. The encouraging news is that this figure is almost 6% higher than the total recorded in 2019, reaching 24,593,281 people.
David Ciceo, President of the Romanian Airports Association, expressed his delight at the strong recovery in passenger traffic, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. He pointed out that significant investments in infrastructure, have contributed to this performance, and that expansion and facility modernization projects have prepared airports to optimally handle an ever-increasing number of passengers. Projections indicate that by 2040, Romania's airports could exceed 50 million passengers.
Analyzing the traffic details on domestic and external routes, there is an 8% decrease on domestic routes in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching 1,821,052 passengers. In contrast, traffic on international routes recorded an impressive 19.62% increase over the same period, reaching 22,737,257 passengers.
During 2023, 233,027 aircraft movements (landings and take-offs) were recorded, representing an increase of 5.6% over the previous year. However, cargo traffic saw a decrease of 5.7%, carrying 50,786 tonnes compared to 53,877 tonnes in 2022.
