In 2023, the world was marked by particularly disturbing tragedies, including plane crashes, bus crashes and devastating fires. Agerpres has compiled a retrospective of the most notable disasters: 

JANUARY

15 - At least 67 people lost their lives in Nepal when a Yeti Airlines passenger plane crashed in the city of Pokhara, some 200 kilometers northwest of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.


18 - At least 14 people, including Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastyrski and his first deputy Yevgeny Yenin, have died after a helicopter crashed near Kiev.

28 - At least 24 people, including Haitians, died after the bus they were travelling in fell off a cliff for an unknown reason in the Piura region north of Lima, Peru.

29 - At least 40 people are dead after the bus they were on fell off a bridge in south-west Pakistan and exploded.

FEBRUARY

14 - 20 people are dead and about 60 others injured in South Africa after a collision between a bus and an armoured van in Limpopo province.

26 - At least 27 migrants have died after their boat sank near the Italian city of Crotone in the southern region of Calabria.


28. - 57 people died in Greece in a collision between a ferry and a passenger train travelling between Athens and Thessaloniki.

MARCH

3 - At least 31 people are injured when a lorry and a coach collide in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg.

19. - The driver of a bus loaded with passengers lost control of the steering wheel and fell off a bridge near Shibchar in Bangladesh, an accident in which 19 people lost their lives.

28 - A fire at a migrant centre in northern Mexico on the US border has left at least 38 people dead.


APRIL

18. - A fire at a hospital in Beijing's Fengtai district killed 29 people.

MAY

7 - At least 27 workers have died in a fire at a gold mine in the Peruvian region of Arequipa.

- At least 20 people have died after a boat carrying tourists capsized in the southern state of Kerala.

22 - At least 20 people, mostly children, have died after a fire broke out in a school hostel in central Guyana's Mahdia.


JUNE

2. - At least 275 people died and about 900 others were injured in a railway disaster in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. A Coromandel Express passenger train and a freight train collided near Balasore, about 200 kilometers from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.

 21 - At least 31 people were killed and seven others injured in an explosion at a restaurant in the northwestern Chinese city of Yinchuan.

30. - At least 48 people were killed in a road accident at a busy intersection in western Kenya.

JULY

1 - At least 25 people were killed and 8 others injured after a bus caught fire on a highway in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

5. - At least 20 people have died in a bus crash in Mexico, in the town of Magdalena Penasco in Oaxaca state. The bus crashed into a ravine.

6. - At least 24 people, including children, lost their lives after a gas leak in a makeshift settlement near Boksburg, about 40 km east of Johannesburg.

27 - 23 people have lost their lives and six are missing in the Philippines after their small boat capsized on a lake near the capital Manila after being hit by strong winds.

AUGUST

6 - At least 22 people are killed and more than 50 injured in a train crash in Pakistan.

14. - An explosion occurred in the commercial area of San Cristobal in the south of the Dominican Republic, killing 32 people and injuring 59.

31. - At least 74 people, including 12 children, lost their lives in a fire at a building in Johannesburg.


SEPTEMBER    

26 - At least 100 people died and 150 others were injured in an overnight fire during a wedding taking place in a function hall in Hamdaniyah, northern Iraq.

OCTOBER

3 - At least 21 people were killed, including four Romanians, and about 20 others injured in Venice when a bus carrying tourists, including Ukrainians, French and Germans, fell off a bridge and caught fire.

 28 - A chain reaction road accident involving several vehicles on a highway in Egypt has left at least 32 people dead.

NOVEMBER

3 - At least 27 people died after a fire broke out at a rehab center in northern Iran.

15 - At least 37 people died in Indian Kashmir after a bus they were travelling in overturned on a mountain road and fell into a ravine.

22. - At least 23 people have died in Peru after the bus they were on went off the road and plunged 300 metres into a cliff.
