In a clear sign of the revival of the aviation industry, passenger air transport in Romania has recorded an impressive 18.8% growth in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period in 2022.
Data centralised by the National Institute of Statistics reveals that 18,703,500 passengers were registered during this period.
Airports were the key points of this increase, with Henri Coandă-București leading the way with 5,548,600 passengers boarded and 5,491,000 disembarked. Next came Avram Iancu-Cluj-Napoca, with 1,268,000 passengers boarded and 1,233,700 disembarked, and Iași International Airport, with 882,000 passengers boarded and 876,700 disembarked, INS data show.
In terms of international transport, the top ten airports of origin for passengers disembarking in Romania included destinations such as London Luton, Milan-Bergamo, Istanbul International and others, with London Luton leading the way with 775,577 passengers.
Italy, the UK and Germany were the countries of origin with the highest passenger numbers, and their main destinations included Romania in their journeys.
In domestic transport, Henri Coandă-București, Avram Iancu-Cluj-Napoca and Traian Vuia-Timișoara airports were the protagonists, contributing significantly to passenger traffic in the country.
The third quarter of 2023 brought an impressive 3,699,200 enplaned passengers and 3,717,200 deplaned passengers, with international traffic dominating with 94%. Henri Coandă-București continued to assert itself as a major hub, with over 2 million passengers embarking and disembarking.
These remarkable figures underline not only an economic recovery, but also a return of passenger confidence in air transport, paving the way for continued development of the industry in Romania.
