Boeing 787 Dreamliner delivered scientists and equipment to Antarctica

For thefirst time in history, a Boeing 787 passenger airliner has landed inAntarctica. A team of 45 researchers and employees of the Norwegian Polar Institute,as well as 12 tonnes of scientific equipment, were on board.

Accordingto Sky News , the plane landed at the Troll airfield, which is a 3 km long strip ofblue ice. The airfield is open only from October to March. Every year, up to 10aircraft of various sizes arrive there. However, the possibility of flying muchlarger aircraft will help reduce the number of flights required.

"Themost important thing is the environmental benefits that we can achieve by usinglarger and more modern aircraft of this type for Troll," said CamillaBrekke, director of the institute.
