Nobel Prize winner Higgs, who predicted the existence of the elementary boson particle, dies at the age of 94
Yesterday, on April 8, the Nobel Prize-winning British theoretical physicist Peter Higgs died at the age of 94. Scientist predicts existence of elementary boson particle
About it writes Espresso.
About this reported at the University of Edinburgh, where Higgs was an honorary professor.
It is indicated that the theoretical physicist died after a brief illness.
In 1964, Peter Higgs hypothesized the existence of a boson, predicting the existence of this elementary particle. This made it possible to understand the mechanism of mass formation (the Higgs boson). Almost 50 years later, scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research announced the discovery of the particle in 2012. Already in March 2013, the discovery was confirmed.
Higgs and Belgian theoretical physicist François Englert were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. The experts received the prize for their theoretical work that allowed them to explain the appearance of mass in elementary particles, which was later confirmed by the experimental detection of the Higgs boson.
The British theoretical physicist is also a laureate of the Dirac Medal awarded by the Institute of Physics in London and the European Physical Society's Prize in High Energy Particle Physics. Higgs was also a member of the Royal Society of London and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
