"The Security Service of Ukraine's counterintelligence service foiled an attempt by the russian federation to inflict fire on strategic facilities of Ukrzaliznytsia in Chernihiv region. As a result of a special operation in the regional center, a russian agent was detained who was preparing a missile strike on the railway line connecting the northern and eastern regions of Ukraine," the statement said.

According to the investigation, the suspect was an employee of Ukrzaliznytsia, who in 2023 became an active participant in Telegram channels, as a result of which he was noticed by the russians.

The detainee was supposed to check russian intelligence on the possible use of the railway line to move equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to fulfill the tasks of the occupiers. The Ukrzaliznytsia employee covertly tracked the movement of trains and recorded the directions of their routes, as well as the locations of stops.

Then the defendant was supposed to pass the information in the form of coordinates of the railway line and rolling stock handling points to the russian curator. The detainee also wanted to confirm this information with photographs.

The SBU emphasizes that another possible target of the russian federation was platforms for cargo servicing of rolling stock.

It is noted that the enemy intended to use the data received from the agent for a missile strike on the infrastructure of Ukrzaliznytsia in order to interfere with the logistics of the Ukrainian military.

"However, SBU officers prevented the transfer of the intelligence report to russian intelligence. This became possible due to the timely exposure of the traitor and his detention while performing an enemy task," the statement said.

During the search of the man's apartment, a mobile phone and a tablet were found, which he used to communicate with the occupiers.

"Currently, the Security Service investigators have served him a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law)," the SBU emphasizes.

The detainee is in custody. He faces life imprisonment.

Note: according to Art. 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict.
