Police detain man on suspicion of murdering deputy mayor of Nikopol
The suspect had been preparing for the crime for four months and planned to kill other officials
Police in Dnipropetrovsk region have detained a 33-year-old man suspected of murdering the deputy mayor of Nikopol on February 8.
The press service of the National Police of Ukraine reported this in a statement.
"The police detained the suspect in a rented apartment near the crime scene," - the statement said.
The National Police said that the man had been preparing for the crime for four months and was also planning to kill other officials in the city.
"When the victim's car drove closer, the suspect fired more than 20 shots from an automatic weapon and threw a grenade at the car, which led to the car catching fire and the death of the official," - the press service said.
Law enforcement officers also found the attacker's firearm. It was buried in a forest plantation. The weapon is currently being examined by experts.
The court imposed on the suspect a pre-trial restraint in the form of detention without bail.
Recall that the Head of the National Police Ivan Vyhivskyi explained whether law enforcement officers should issue summonses to territorial centers of recruitment and social support.
