Data from the National Institute of Statistics show a remarkable 12.2% expansion in the first ten months of 2023

At a time when the economy appears to be recovering, Romania's construction sector recorded robust growth in the first ten months of 2023. According to INS, construction work volume increased by 12.2% in gross terms and by 12.5% in working-day and seasonally adjusted terms.

In the capital repairs segment, there was an impressive 18.2% increase, reflecting significant investment in improving existing infrastructure. New construction works also saw a notable expansion of 12.8%, indicating continued interest in the development of new projects.

Differences in construction objects are evident in the figures presented by the NSI. Engineering construction saw a significant increase of 30.7%, showing an emphasis on infrastructure projects. In contrast, residential buildings fell by 7.2%, perhaps reflecting a shift in housing market preferences.

In October 2023, the growth in the volume of construction work continued, with an increase of 11.2% on a gross basis. Ongoing maintenance and repair work was the main driver of this growth, expanding by 27.7%.

With growth of 10.7% in October 2023 compared to the same month last year, the construction sector appears to be a vital driver of Romania's economic recovery. As ongoing maintenance and repair work remains at the forefront of growth, it is clear that investment in infrastructure and the development of new projects is at the heart of this economic upturn.
