Authorities take drastic measures to contain outbreak and prevent spread of deadly virus

The Institute of Diagnostics and Animal Health has confirmed the presence of H5N1 avian influenza virus in a commercial laying hen farm in Piscani, Olt county. The authorities reacted immediately, isolating the outbreak and starting procedures to eliminate the infected birds.

More than 73,000 birds will be culled from the outbreak and rigorous eradication and disinfection measures will be applied. Protection and surveillance zones have been established around the outbreak with movement restrictions to prevent the spread of the virus.

ANSVSA has asked for the support of farmers and citizens in complying with biosecurity measures and reporting bird mortalities immediately. Authorities stress the importance of surveillance programmes and call for cooperation in the effort to prevent the spread of avian influenza in the country.
