Violent fires in the Cape of Good Hope area
Fire outbreaks in South Africa are forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people and causing massive destruction, with intense efforts to extinguish the flames
Two fire outbreaks have broken out in the Cape of Good Hope area of South Africa, causing the evacuation of 300 people and the destruction of more than 1,150 hectares since Tuesday. Access to Cape Town, at the "tip" of the continent, has been closed and authorities are facing ideal conditions for forest fires, with strong winds and high temperatures in the middle of the southern summer.
The fires have been fuelled by violent gusts of wind and authorities are struggling to contain the blazes. While there are no direct threats to homes at present, the fires have caused significant damage and affected wildlife. According to news.ro, spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says many snakes and lizards have been decimated.
Firefighting efforts involve about 130 city firefighters, supported by five helicopters and two water bomber aircraft. Evacuations and damage are ongoing, and authorities are warning of the dangers of the weather conditions. The Cape of Good Hope region is gearing up for the holiday season, and the fires may affect the flow of tourists and activities during this period.
