The prosecutor's office in Kaiserslautern, in Western Germany, reports.

About 60 customs officers and several prosecutors have searched a number of commercial and private premises of several independent car dealers in Germersheim. They are suspected of exporting a significant number of mostly high-end cars from Germany and shipping them to Russia, circumventing the European Union embargo.

About 190 such illegal exports are now suspected, with a total value of millions of dollars.

According to investigators, the defendants deliberately falsely told German authorities that they were exporting cars to Russia's neighboring countries, such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Turkey. In fact, the vehicles were sold to Russia.

"During the searches, a number of evidences were seized. In addition, numerous accounts of the main defendant and a significant amount of cash were seized to seize assets worth more than 4.5 million euros", the prosecutor's office added.
