South Korea detains ship on suspicion of violating UN sanctions
At the scene of the detention, the ship was heading from russia to China via North Korea
South Korea has detained a cargo ship off the Korean Strait on suspicion of violating U.N. Security Council sanctions against North Korea. The ship is now anchored in Busan on the country's southeastern coast.
The 2,900-ton foreign-flagged cargo ship, which was carrying coal and iron ore with 10 crew members when it was seized, was believed to be heading from russia to China via North Korea.
The cargo ship, which was en route to russia's vladivostok in late March and was detained in waters near Yeosu, is also currently anchored in the port of Busan with its captain and other crew on board.
On April 3, it was reported that South Korea detained a flagless cargo ship suspected of violating U.N. sanctions against North Korea. It was allegedly heading to russia.
