Law enforcers have recorded more than 300 cases of sexual violence by Russian military officers against women, men and minors in Ukraine

"The attorney general's office has documented more than three hundred cases of war-related sexual violence. But the actual number of victims is much higher because the Russian military is committing sexual violence throughout the occupied territory. It affects women, men and even children. Illegally held civilians and prisoners of war suffer from sexual violence", she said.

Lytvinova noted that Ukrainian law enforcers have now identified 49 Russian military personnel and informed them of suspicion of committing sexual violence. At the same time, 29 indictments have been sent to court, and judges have already announced five verdicts.

"Sexual violence is used to intimidate and humiliate. Sexual violence is a weapon for the destruction of Ukrainians as a nation", the deputy prosecutor general emphasized.

She also stressed that Ukrainian law enforcers, in order not to harm the victims, investigate crimes of sexual violence using a special methodology. Psychologists are also involved.

  • On June 19, it was reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Law No. 8329, which aims to strengthen the fight against domestic violence and violence against women. In particular, it provides for penalties for offensive messages of a sexual nature.
