"The biggest wish (Ukrainians — ed.) is to be independent and free in the world. They want missiles to stop hitting their cities. They want to live free from fear. They want their children to be safe without worrying all the time about the next air alert", the European Commission president stressed.
She urged the international community to think about whether it is right that a big country can attack a neighboring country and take a piece of territory.
"The answer, of course, is no. And it's spelled out in the UN charter. And that's why it's vital that we approve that charter and that we vow again to adhere firmly to the principles of the UN charter. Freezing the conflict today while foreign troops occupy Ukrainian territory is not the answer. In fact, it is a recipe for further wars of aggression", von der Leyen said.
She said Ukraine's allies and partners need to support a "holistic, just and lasting peace," one that will help restore Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity. Furthermore, she stressed that the inviolability of all borders and the sovereignty of all states are at stake.
