Norway's parliament supports 140 billion euros in defense funding through 2036
The Norwegian parliament Storting unanimously supported a long-term development plan for the country's armed forces, which envisages an increase in defense funding to 140 billion euros by 2036
According to the approved plan, Norway will spend about 140 billion euros (NOK 1.635 trillion) on defense by 2036. That amount is 611 kroner more than the budget that was previously planned.
The publication notes that the Norwegian parliament's decision complements a proposal submitted in April to buy six instead of five submarines, an additional long-range air defense system for Oslo and improved pension conditions that should increase military recruitment.
At the same time, the Storting will require the Norwegian government to provide annual reports on the status and implementation of the plan. It is also noted that there will be more of persons liable for military duty, conscription and reservists, and the Norwegian army will increase from one to three brigades.
- On April 2, the Norwegian government announced intentions to increase the number of military recruits from 9,000 to 13,500 by 2036 amid Russia's war against Ukraine.
- On April 5 the Norwegian government unveiled a new long-term defense plan that would nearly double spending on the army over the next 12 years amid Russia's war against Ukraine.
