Synchronised reactions: Joy, achievement and the start of EU negotiations

Following the European Council's historic announcement that the Republic of Moldova has been granted candidate status in EU accession negotiations, Moldovan leaders reacted with joy and determination.

Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova

"I was very happy. It's true that I was nervous because the signals were not necessarily positive and until the last minute it was not clear what the decision would be. It is indeed a historic decision because it marks an important step in our European path and it is a recognition that Moldovans deserve to join the EU."

Igor Grosu, President of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova

"We have been waiting for this decision for a long time. When I received the first messages, I say: let me check again, it's too nice to believe all of a sudden. It was a crowning moment. A great moment, it was worth all the joint effort, ours, yours and society's, those who believed in us."

Dorin Recean, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova:

"From Monday, everyone starts negotiations. Teams are leaving for Brussels. We have reached a very important stage. I want to mention that what has been so far, was just the warm-up. From Monday, we have to negotiate on all 33 chapters. This is our historic chance and I am sure we will take this chance to build Europe here at home."

These reactions show a collective boost in morale and determination for the Republic of Moldova, opening a new stage in its journey towards the European Union.
