A Daring Journey to Versailles: From Cook's Daughter to King's Sweetheart

"Jeanne du Barry", a historical drama-biography by director Maïwenn, immerses us in the world of the opulent halls of 18th-century Versailles, telling the story of Jeanne Bécu, who went from courtesan to favorite of King Louis XV. The film strikes a realistic atmosphere, accentuated by exquisite music and breathtaking acting. Maïwenn, known for her penchant for improvisation, gives the actors freedom, which makes their portrayals lively and sincere.

The viewer witnesses not only Jeanne's brilliant life, but also the cruel intrigues, guile and jealousy that raged at court. The movie does not bypass the darker sides of the time either, touching on issues of racial discrimination. Although the political aspects of the era are not revealed in depth, the Bourbon-Habsburg alliance, which was the topic of many conversations at Versailles, is depicted on screen. Some viewers may note that some of the actors, such as Maïwenn herself, do not quite live up to the images of the time. Her image as a brown-haired woman with loose hair contrasts with the snow-white skin and high hairstyles popular at the time.

Interesting Fact:
There is a legend that it was Jeanne du Barry who caused the death of King Louis. Allegedly, it was she who sent the king a girl who was already sick with smallpox at the time of her visit, and it was from her that the king contracted the disease. However, this is just a legend and there is no historical evidence of this even on the Versailles website.

The acting in the movie is commendable. Maïwenn has perfectly inhabited the role of the protagonist, although at times her improvisation seems unfinished. Johnny Depp, in an unexpected role as a French king, played a solid eight, bringing some Jack Sparrow-style humor to the film. Also, worth noting, Pierre Richard, who perfectly played the role of Duke Richelieu.

The film's musical accompaniment, created by Stephen Warbeck (Oscar-winning composer for the music to "Shakespeare in Love"), harmoniously complements the atmosphere of the tape. Calm melodies do not bore, but only emphasize the narrative.

"Jeanne du Barry" is an undeniably beautiful and fascinating film, which gives viewers a journey into the times of luxury and intrigue. It is not overloaded with deep meaning, but sincerely entertains and gives pleasant emotions. However, as some critics note, the movie does not give a full picture of the historical events of the time, sometimes excessively pressing on the emotions of the viewer. It is also worth noting that much of the success of the movie is probably due to the participation of Johnny Depp. If not for his star name, the tape might not have paid off because with a budget of $22.4 million, its box office receipts amounted to only $13.8 million.

In general, "Jeanne du Barry" is a quality historical film with great acting, beautiful costumes and sets, as well as a fascinating story. It will be a great choice for those who want to relax and plunge into the atmosphere of the Louis XV era.

"Jeanne du Barry" is not the only biographical film that tells about the life of the king's favorite. Here are a few other films that can be compared to this picture:

  • "Valerie and Her Week of Wonders" (1972): This French film follows the life of another favorite of Louis XV, Madame de Pompadour. It also depicts the luxurious life of Versailles, but with a greater emphasis on political intrigue and the minions' influence on the king.

  • "The Favourite" (2018): This British film follows the rivalry between two women who compete for Queen Anne's favor. It depicts the cruelty and perfidy of court life, but with an ironic and satirical approach.

"Jeanne du Barry" differs from these films in several aspects. First, the film focuses on the life of Jeanne Bécu, who was a lesser-known favorite than Madame de Pompadour. Second, Maiwenn's movie is more emotional and personal, focusing on Jeanne's feelings and experiences. Third, Madame du Barry has a more modern style with elements of improvisation and black humor.

Rating: 7/10
