According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a malfunction in this system could increase the risk of injury to passengers in the event of a collision. In addition, the regulator said the autos don't meet federal safety requirements because the warning light and horn may not work if the driver isn't wearing a seat belt.

The recall applies to some Model S vehicles manufactured in 2012-2024, Model X 2015-2024, Model 3 2017-2023, and Model Y 2020-2023. To fix the problem, Tesla will release a software update. It is expected to be released in June.

The regulator notes that during the update, the system's reliance on a sensor in the driver's seat will be eliminated: it will then depend on the seat belt.

  • In mid-April, Tesla recalled more than 3,800 electric Cybertruck pickup trucks in the U.S. because of a faulty accelerator pedal.
